Dear Ascension parishioners,

We have only cancelled worship services once in the (twelve) years I have been here. But council and I have discussed it, and, to be on the safe side, we have decided to cancel all activities at Ascension this Sunday. We know how far some parishioners travel, and don’t want you to risk that; we also know that it is uncertain as to when the plow truck will plow out our parking lot. Right now the lot is covered in ice, which is itself mostly covered in snow. What Sunday brings will add to the slipperiness.

I suggest that you use this Sunday morning to meditate on the scripture readings (attached to this email), or on the beauty of God’s creation, or on the meaning of the powerful messages of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King’s famous speeches are easily accessed through the internet. It is a thrill to hear his voice and his convictions, so often based in biblical teachings. I have recently felt so grateful to live in our country, where a national holiday is kept in memory of this prophetic leader.

Quotes from Dr. King:

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.

We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.

Blessings on you this Sunday morning,

Pr. Nancy and Ascension’s church council
